AFC Wimbledon have become the first football club to be presented with a Big Society award, set up in November 2010 in order "to recognise individuals, groups or organisations that are demonstrating the Big Society in their work or activities."
Although the term Big Society is a fairly new one in political terms, it could be argued that what Supporters' Trusts and supporter owned football clubs such as AFC Wimbledon have been doing for over a decade encapsulates its core principles of community engagement, use of volunteers, and understanding that local institutions such as football clubs have a duty not just to their season ticket holders but to the communities where they are based
AFC Wimbledon were one of over 50 Supporters' Trusts, supporter owned clubs or friends of the Trust movement to submit evidence to the CMS Select Committee inquiry into Football Governance, which reported in July 2011.
